Why Tariffs Are Raising the Cost of Auto Repairs – and How RevTech Performance is Helping

If you’ve noticed that auto repair prices have been on the rise, you’re not alone. This isn’t just due to general inflation or higher labor costs – it’s also a result of tariffs on imported auto parts. At RevTech Performance, we know how much our customers value the performance and longevity of their vehicles, so we want to break down why these tariffs are impacting the cost of repairs and what we’re doing to keep you on the road without breaking the bank.

How Tariffs Are Impacting Foreign Car Repairs

Tariffs are essentially taxes placed on imported goods. When the U.S. government imposes tariffs on foreign-made auto parts, it raises the cost of those parts for everyone down the supply chain – from manufacturers to distributors to local repair shops like ours. This can be particularly challenging for owners of European, Japanese, and other foreign vehicles, as many of these parts are sourced internationally.

For example, a turbocharger for a German performance car that typically costs $1,500 might jump to $1,725 overnight with a 15% tariff. Unlike inflation, which gradually increases prices over time, tariffs create a one-time cost increase that sticks until the tariff is removed or reduced. However, the impact doesn’t end there. With ongoing supply chain disruptions, these price hikes can also lead to parts shortages, making it even harder to find the components you need for critical repairs.

Supply Chain Challenges – Why Parts Could Get Harder to Find

One of the less obvious but critical effects of tariffs is the strain they place on global supply chains. When tariffs make importing parts more expensive, many suppliers reduce their inventories to avoid the higher costs, leading to potential shortages. This can make it harder to find parts for your vehicle, especially if you drive a less common model or a high-performance European car that relies on specialized components.

This is one reason why we always recommend keeping up with regular maintenance. By staying on top of routine services like oil changes, brake fluid flushes, and transmission services, you can reduce the risk of sudden, major repairs that may be harder to address if parts become scarce.

Why Now is a Great Time to Take Care of Your Car

With new vehicle prices also climbing due to supply chain disruptions and potential tariffs on completed vehicles, many drivers are choosing to hold onto their current cars longer. This makes regular maintenance even more important. By keeping your current vehicle in peak condition, you can avoid the high cost of a new car purchase and extend the life of your current ride.

Positive News on the Trade Front

While the current tariff situation can feel uncertain, there are some positive signs on the horizon. The recent trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom has set a precedent for other nations, potentially easing tariff pressures in the future. In fact, several countries have already agreed to come to the negotiating table with the U.S. to discuss similar deals, which could help stabilize parts prices and improve supply chains moving forward.

Additionally, on May 12, 2025, the United States and China reached a temporary trade agreement in Geneva, agreeing to significantly reduce their recently heightened tariffs and pave the way for further negotiations over the next 90 days. The U.S. decreased tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China lowered its tariffs on U.S. products from 125% to 10%. This partial de-escalation, though leaving tariffs substantially elevated compared to pre-escalation levels, averted what officials described as the equivalent of a trade embargo. Both sides emphasized collaboration and set up consultations to address ongoing trade issues.
